Leadership VS Management

A discussion by Colin Reeve on the difference between leadership and management brings to light some interesting points that can enlighten people on how to improve their effect on the team they coach.

Are they the same or are they different?

Reeve emphasizes, they are both. They are both same and different. Yet he explains success must include both.

He says they are different because they come from a different part of the body and a different set of skill sets. They are the same because the reference of leadership is often used to describe someone who has management in their job title. He describes it like a plate of spaghetti, where the noodles all blend together and there is a little distinction between where one noodle ends and the other begins. Management usually has a negative spin while leadership has taken on a positive spin.
Reeve explains the reality is that you need an effective blend of the two if you truly want to be successful in an organization.

According to Reeve, management is about things, predominately external and involves processes, numbers, theories and strategies. Leadership is internal and involves passion, motivation and inspiration. Leadership, he explains, is often related to our morals and values.
He relates the contrast to the comparison between principle and technique in karate. In Karate, there are often distinctions between technique and principle. Technique is what you see and principle is heart that gives power to the technique.

In his example, Management is the technique and the Leadership is the heart of management and it is power to the technique. Just like in Karate, the heart and principle is the difference between success and failure, high morale verses low morale.

It seems a simple explanation that to be successful and the head of an organization, you must understand the technique, perfect the system. Then envelope it with the passion and heart to truly have an impact on those you are trying to coach.
